It actually is. Today, June 10th, is my birthday. For my birthday this year, I decided I didn't want to spend the night with family or friends, or a combination of the two, cutting a traditional cake as the people around me sang the 'Happy Birthday' song out of key. Instead, I wanted to try something new. For this reason, they decided to make a second Fantastic Four (which they had to carefully plan a year in advance), launch it in the middle of June (they originally gave it a July date to try and fake me out) and hold a press screening on my birthday. Amazing, huh?
In reality, I guess you and I both know that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was not planned as a birthday gift to me. However, today really is my birthday, and I intend to celebrate with the best cake room service can offer.
Unlike our trips abroad, this trip was almost just around the corner, which meant it required very little in the way of travel. In a way, this has been a blessing, because it eliminated the need to rise well before the dawn, catch a bus to the airport - hoping we arrived at the right place, given we'd gotten on the bus with eyes half-closed with sleep - and endure a flight that always lasts just long enough for your ass to fall asleep and a crick to form in your neck.
I might not make travel sound glamorous, but secretly I really like it. I love the fact that you can step into a giant metal 'bird', possibly fall asleep for a few hours, and wake up in a new country. It's a bit like finding the country in your wardrobe, only with a longer trip, and little bags of pretzel sticks.
Not to mention, the best part of travelling is reaching your destination, especially when that destination is a trip to be involved in press for the films I love. Don't let my whining fool you; our trips so far have been amazing, and I've had the good fortune of meeting very lovely people and making some amazing friends.
It was after a relatively short two-hour bus trip that we arrived in London, a city that neither of us are unfamiliar with, and trudged our suitcases and other effects (well, I trudged - I guess I do the walking, as Ben Grimm says) onto the tube. We sweated our way to Waterloo station, and after a few wrong turns we found our way around to the hotel. And while I'm looking forward to the movie screening tonight, it definitely comes second to the air conditioning that's offering relief from the London heat.
I'll be back after the screening to post my thoughts!
